edge profiles

Shaping the Silhouette of Your Space

The edge profile of your countertop affects more than just the look; it impacts the room's flow, safety, and functionality. From sleek, modern minimalism to classic, traditional elegance, we offer a range of edge details to match your design goals.

Popular Edge Details

  • Eased / Flat Polish
    • The Detail: A clean, straight edge with slightly softened corners to prevent chipping and sharpness.
    • Design Aspect: The ultimate chameleon. It offers a clean, understated look that lets the stone’s surface pattern take center stage.
    • Best For: Modern, contemporary, and transitional kitchens or bathrooms where clean lines are a priority.
  • Bevel (1/4″ or 1/2″)
    • The Detail: A sharp, 45-degree angle clipped off the top edge, creating a distinct, architectural line.
    • Design Aspect: Adds subtle geometric visual interest and catches the light beautifully, making it an excellent bridge between modern and traditional styles.

Best For: Transitional spaces, contemporary kitchens, or sophisticated office surfaces.

  • Bullnose (Full & Half)
    • The Detail: A completely rounded edge from top to bottom (Full) or rounded on top with a flat bottom (Half).
    • Design Aspect: Soft, timeless, and inherently inviting. The curved profile softens the hard nature of stone and brings warmth to a room.
    • Best For: Traditional homes, high-traffic family kitchens (no sharp corners for kids!), and bathrooms.
  • Ogee
    • The Detail: An elegant, S-shaped curve that cascades down the edge of the stone.
    • Design Aspect: Traditional, luxurious, and ornate. It draws the eye and highlights the depth and craftsmanship of thick stone slabs.
    • Best For: Formal traditional kitchens, classic master baths, or a striking focal point on a large kitchen island.
  • Mitered Apron
    • The Detail: Two slabs joined at a precise 45-degree angle to create the illusion of a massive, heavy block of stone.
    • Design Aspect: Bold, luxurious, and ultra-modern. It allows you to create a thick, dramatic profile (e.g., a 2″ to 3″ thick look) without the added weight of an entire solid slab.

Best For: Statement waterfall kitchen islands, modern floating vanities, and luxury reception desks.

designers tip on edges:

Think about your space’s traffic. If you have a narrow kitchen or small children, softer or slightly rounded profiles like Eased or Half-Bullnose maximize safety. If you are designing a show-stopping island, consider combining an Ogee or Mitered edge on the island with a simpler Eased edge on the perimeter countertops to create visual hierarchy.

finishes

Texture, Light, and Feel

The finish of your stone dictates how it reflects light and how it feels to the touch. The exact same slab can look entirely different depending on whether it is polished to a mirror shine or left with an earthy, matte texture.

The Three Main Finishes Explained

Polished Finish

    • The Look & Feel: A smooth, glossy, mirror-like surface that reflects light brilliantly.
    • Design Aspect: High-end, classic, and vibrant. A polished finish acts like a magnifying glass, intensifying the depth of the stone’s colors, veining, and natural crystal structures.

Best For: Traditional to transitional spaces, small kitchens (as it reflects light to make the room feel larger), and low-traffic areas. Note: Scratches and etching are more visible on high-gloss surfaces.

Honed Finish

    • The Look & Feel: Satin-smooth to the touch, entirely matte, and non-reflective.
    • Design Aspect: Contemporary, relaxed, and understated. Honed finishes offer a softer appearance that feels organic and touchable. It expertly conceals fingerprints, water spots, and minor scratches.

Best For: Modern and transitional designs, casual family kitchens, high-traffic areas, and master bathrooms.

Leathered Finish

    • The Look & Feel: A textured, slightly pebbled surface that retains a matte look but follows the natural contours and density of the stone.
    • Design Aspect: Rustic, tactile, and rich. Leathering gives stone a unique personality, highlighting its natural character. Because it closes the pores of the stone more than a honed finish, it is incredibly stain-resistant.

Best For: Farmhouse, rustic, or industrial designs, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and statement island tops.

designer's tip on finishes:

Consider your lighting. If your kitchen has massive windows with direct sunlight, a polished countertop may create an intense glare at certain points of the day. A honed or leathered finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, creating a softer, more evenly illuminated workspace.
